The Roadmap Update Workshops
The Energy Policy Act of 2005 required the Secretaries of Agriculture and Energy to update the
Biomass R&D Technical Advisory Committee (Committee)'s Roadmap for Biomass
Technologies in the U.S. The Roadmap, originally published in 2002, is available on this site.
In order to update the Roadmap, the Committee has taken a regional approach, to allow for geographic
variances in biomass feedstocks and infrastructure.
The Committee formed a subcommittee to chair the regional workshops:
- Central – Chicago, IL April 11-12, 2006 (Chairman Tom Binder, ADM)
- Western – Sacramento, CA August 8-9, 2006 (Chairman Ralph Cavalieri, Washington State University)
- Eastern – Syracuse, NY September 19-20, 2006 (Chairman Doug Hawkins, Rohm & Haas)
To facilitate productive discussion during each two-day meeting, private workshops consist of
about 30 invited experts who can contribute to the four Roadmap topic areas: Feedstocks, Processing
& Conversion, Product Uses & Distribution, and Policy. Main points of the Central and Western workshops'
discussions were presented to the public by their respective chairpersons at Committee meetings
immediately following. Once all three regional workshops are completed, an update to the Roadmap
will be drafted for review by the Committee and workshop participants.
The updated Roadmap will be published in 2007.
All current Committee documents are posted on the publications page.
